God forbid, if SOPA strikes for real, I would definitely want to save the knowledge for my future generations and let them say, I lived in the time of Wikipedia and Google, in their original, unabridged, uncensored form! Without doubt, I am going to use Kiwix and save all the articles of Wikipedia on my computer. So go on, this time you can definitely save Wikipedia (pun intended) and bring a smile to your face.

Note: I was not able to download the Wikipedia library files due to extremely large download size and my limited bandwidth, and thus I have no clue about the reader but still it looked pretty impressive with all those bookmark, search and navigation buttons located on the top toolbar. Once the articles are downloaded in your library, you can browse through the articles from within Kiwix. There’s no way one can selectively download the articles and it’s either everything or nothing. Kiwix stores all the articles with images as ZIM files (a highly compressed open format with additional meta-data). If you don’t have an internet connection on the computer where you are planning to use the tool, you can download these library files from a direct HTTP or torrent links available on the homepage itself. When the program starts, it displays a help screen for around 5 seconds before the actual program shows up.Īll you need to do now is download the desired Kiwix Wikipedia library files from the list and save it in your Library.

To begin, download and install Kiwix on your computer and launch the program after successfully finishing the setup.

The user interface varies a bit between versions, but fortunately, the user interface is straightforward on all of them: Search for Wikipedia, find the archives for the text and pictures, and then download them. Note: This example used the “Top 100 Wikipedia Articles” archive instead of the complete Wikipedia archive to save on space and time. Click “Open” on the right-hand side to view them. It’ll probably be longer.Īfter the download is finished, click on “Local Files” on the left side of the window just below “All Files ” you’ll see the stuff you just downloaded. You’ll have to wait a bit - even with a gigabit internet connection, you’re still looking at a minimum of about 20 minutes for the entire thing to download. There will be a progress indicator that appears. Once you’re back to the list of available files, download the archives by clicking “Download” on the right-hand side. The settings menu is pretty straightforward - click “Browse” to change where the files will be stored on your device, then close the Settings tab by clicking the “X.” If you want to change your download directory, click on the three dots in the top right corner and click “Settings,” or hit the F12 key. Note the size of the files involved - they’re pretty large. Kiwix displays the size of the archive, the date it was last updated, and the content type. One contains the text, the other contains the pictures. All of Wikipedia is available as two files.
You can either scroll through the list until you find what you want, or use the search function. There are a fair amount of Wikis (including Wikipedia) available already through Kiwix. You could also click “Browse by Language,” if you’d like to find Wikis written in a particular language. Click “All Files” in the top left corner to display a complete list of available content. When the program launches, it’ll display anything you already have downloaded. The user interface is pretty straightforward.
